Inland Empire
USA / Poland / France / 2006

A culmination of most every motif and cipher David Lynch has employed thus far in his career, Inland Empire is also a notably radical shift in his established production methods and tactics—it’s at once familiarly bizarre and uncharacteristically assembled. I can’t recommend anyone coming in to this who doesn’t already champion his earlier films, specifically Fire Walk With Me and Mulholland Drive. As with both films, an initial viewing of Inland Empire is exhaustive and frustrating—like sleeping in someone else’s bed for the first time, it can take some time before you’re lulled into a comfortable dream. And this is more of a cacophony than it is a lullaby.

Lynch was present at the Brattle yesterday evening to respond to some queries about his process, as well as to hand out Lynch-endorsed coffee and Inland Empire coasters—that this film is promoted with coasters says more about it than I can possibly muster.

I’ll be trecking to New York to see this at the end of the year. Just signed up for notification of the endorsed coffee, too (I feel special).
