Writer Paddy Chayefsky and director Sydney Lumet’s 1976 drama (apparently not intended as a “satire”) about a network’s manipulation of a deranged news anchorman. Still potent, scathingly funny and dead on. Faye Dunaway is great as the sexy, hair-tossing, killer television director. William Holden is effective as the has-been director manipulated by Dunaway. Beatrice Straigt (as Holden’s wife) has a marvelous moment confronting Holden about his infidelity. And Finch is wonderfully insane as the deranged/sacrificial lamb anchor man. The editing is incredible – there’s never a dull moment or wasted scene, though the film lacks the scope of other broadcast news films.
