Late (as usual) to the critical skirmish, I can’t figure out what the big fuss, pro or con, is about here. A perfectly amusing film with slight, but identifiable characters, modestly good comic acting, some funny moments, nice cinematography, an apt soundtrack, and a so-so script. Neither a barometer of the health of American “independent” filmmaking nor a putrid, superficial Sundance salad to be kneejerkingly rejected for its mere existence. If there’s any reason to object, it’s that it isn’t enough of anything to get worked up about: not enough Arkin, not enough Carell, not enough Collette.
But considering that last year’s Goldsmith family Christmas viewing comprised The Family Stoneis at least made for some refreshing, light family entertainment.
