Edward G. Robinson gives a great performance as Christopher Cross, a resigned/failed artist bank teller, married to a shrew, who falls in love and is subsequently duped by the crude and iconic femme fatale, Joan Bennett, as Kitty March. In Kitty’s manipulation of Chris they create the artist persona, Katherine March; an identity that thrives despite their demise. Fritz Lang was in top form in what he often called his favorite American production. It’s It’s a refreshing cross between classic noir and black comedy, though Lang remains deadly serious. The film is full of stock characters that play remarkably well into Lang’s overall social commentary.
