Saw it again last night. There’s something audacious and primitive about this production that I love. Like Orson Welles’ Macbeth or early Cassavetes, the energy and bonhomie of the enterprise warms me each time I view it. There’s nothing forced or meticulous about Spencer Williams’ approach despite his seriousness. Or maybe, like Welles, I simply like movies that would play well in tents.
