This meditation on faith and love depite severe obstacles features a family living separate lives, driven on a quest to alleviate the son’s pain after taking a dunk in the polluted Tansui River. The director, Tsai Ming-liang, is as lovingly and painstakingly observant and compassionate as Robert Bresson in his early films, but deeper in his revelations. Unforgettable.
