Taxi Driver is an inimitably New York film, yet it contains no establishing shots that find familiar points of reference, instead favoring midnight alleyways saturated in rain, soot, and trash. Everything is illuminated by neon; the stench and filth are palpable. Travis Bickle’s latent, often misguided hostility for this place is repulsive, but sympathy for him is persistent because the environment fosters his isolation.
