A few dated special effects aside (such as the rather laughable human headed canine), this is downright creepy. The restless, roving camera creates an uneasy feeling throughout and is simply ace as Sutherland fruitlessly seeks aid in a public telephone booth. The paranoia of the film’s female characters – Brooke Adams and the perpetually doomed Veronica Cartwright – is still eerie, especially with Mr. Spock lurking about, pushing conservatism and the “traditional” family down their throats.
