There are things you do hate, Lord. Perfume-smellin’ things, lacy things, things with curly hair.
Burn After Reading finds the Coen brothers revisiting some of their favorite preoccupations: characters posture and struggle for status, are undone by their appetites, and find themselves key players in a labyrinthine plot that they don’t fully understand. As an audience, we find ourselves somewhere between sympathy for the people we’re watching (particularly in the case of Richard Jenkins’ sad-eyed gym manager Ted) and the detached bemusement of the CIA superior played by J.K. Simmons to hilarious effect. We may end up closer to the latter – the film has a bit more bite than heart – but we end up dazzled nonetheless.
Plus, special mention must be given to the inclusion of Coming Up Daisy, the Dermot Mulroney-Claire Danes romantic comedy so hysterically evoked by a ridiculous theatrical one-sheet. It gets my vote for best fake movie of the year.
