Boasting entries from 20th century masters (Bergman, Godard, Rohmer), contemporary standard-bearers (Mike Leigh, Pedro Almodóvar, Hou Hsiao-Hsien), and a host of younger filmmakers from around the world, the 42nd New York Film Festival offers a less star-studded, but more eclectic array than previous festivals. For the next few weeks, we will be presenting reviews of a selection of films from the festival, providing a tiny glimpse into the state of contemporary cinema.
